Last edited by Clu 2 ; 8 Sep, pm. It's going to start out on PC. Whether that means Steam is anyone's guess.

If it is available through Steam, I'd wager it would still require its own login to make it able to be multi-platform, so that PC players can also play against iOS, mobile, xbOne, PS4, etc. Assuming Arena ever gets to those platforms Arena needs to be cross-platform if they want it to be a success. Now that we're in Open Beta, you will no longer need an Access Code in order to participate - Magic: The Gathering Arena is now available and free to download for everyone!

Top Questions

Gems can be purchased in the store and can also be used to purchase packs and enter competitive tournaments. Will it be the digital version of Magic: The Gathering everyone had been waiting for, poised to compete with such recent card game hits as Hearthstone or Eternal? Heck, can it compete with Magic's own digital predecessors? What does it have to offer that the alternatives couldn't provide?

This was long before phone and tablet games and, for the past 15 or so years, it has been reserved primarily for purists and professionals. The reason for this was twofold.

The first is that Magic: The Gathering has a much more complex rules engine than a game like Hearthstone or Elder Scrolls: Legends, which means that it's much more complicated to emulate that experience on a smaller platform. This complexity has contributed to numerous version updates, interface changes, and complaints about software bugs throughout MTGO's lifespan.

The second is that players simply have a hard time reinvesting the same money they sunk into their paper collections on an online platform—buying their collections twice, so to speak. While a game like Hearthstone can be free-to-play, with incentives like pack discounts and daily quests, MTGO is not such a beast and often mirrors the same costs as its paper counterpart.

While MTGO has provided the truest and most authentic Magic-playing experience available online, both of these issues have been huge barriers for the success of Magic in a digital environment.

InWizards of the Coast tried a new approach. They released another Magic product called Duels of the Planeswalkers. Unlike Magic Online, this version had more of the aspects we had come to love in other digital card games, but at the cost of some functionality to Magic's intricate rules engine and turn structures. This made it mostly unsuitable for professional players looking to get some practice in or prepare for upcoming events. There were new editions of Duels in,andwith the and versions being available for the first time on iPad and Android tablets.

Unfortunately, while Duels was updated through the Amonkhet expansion set in Aprilit was ultimately cancelled after that, presumably to shift efforts to what I'm going to discuss today: MTG Arena. Previously, only a handful of players were able to explore the client and see what the game was all about, while unable to talk about or stream the game due to the NDA. This all changed on March 22nd. So where does the client stand now? Is it the savior we've been waiting for, or should we expect it to hit Magic's digital graveyard at some point in the future?

As soon as you load up the client, you can see the Hearthstone influence, and it makes sense; Hearthstone is making a killing in the digital card game arena, so why shouldn't the original trading card game get in on the action?

Without insulting the depth of Hearthstone—something I have defended ad nauseam—the problem is that it's a much simpler game than Magic, and the client rewards that. There are no actions that take place on your opponent's turn, no way to respond to your opponent's cards, no different steps and phases in a turn, no lands to play or different mana to specifically select.

In Hearthstone, you drag your card to the battlefield, let it go, and that's basically it. The same is true of attacking.Last Updated on March 19, Then, about six months later, it popped up on Reddit again here and here.

The most recent posts date from about 4 months ago, and all have the same outcome: there is no current information available from any Wizards of the Coast sources supporting an Android release anytime soon. However, there have been some recent changes that have popped up, but with little detail.

Eh da nisi tako lepa tab

So, why has MTGA taken so long to pave their way down the mobile avenue? Apart from several discussions online, the most obvious place to look is statements Wizards of the Coast have given in the past about where they are in terms of planned releases and developments. In their September State of the Game announcement, they gave us a roadmap that covers their current focus. Take a look:. Well, it looks like they may have managed to make some headway on that coding.

The Friends List feature was pushed back, though you can read more about that in our article on the topic. It seems now like it really was just a matter of time. It sounds like they may even release Android and IOS in one go, who knows!

The Grand Calcutron. In the same Reddit posts we mentioned earlier, there are players who are pro-small screen, and there are players who are anti-small screen.

We know that games like Hearthstone and Eternal are playable on mobile devices, but there are some pretty hefty differences between them and MTG. The biggest difference is that the MTG board states can be vastly more intricate than those on Hearthstone or Eternal. With MTG, you have full control to make things as crazy as your heart desires to a certain extentand it can get pretty massive and hard to sift through. I mean, can you imagine slogging through this on a tiny little phone screen:.

Even on a computer screen, this is quite the state to organize. Having to do all of that on a phone is a whole new level of tedious. So, what are some ways to make sure the game is still playable on a phone? Famously, half the fun of Magic is interacting with read: hopefully blindsiding your opponent.

It would appear that Magic: The Gathering Arena really will be coming to mobile at some point in the near future. While it has always been assumed that the popular digital card game would get a mobile release, nothing official has been announced.

Thanks to Hasbro 's CEO, however, it would appear that some sort of mobile integration will be announced later this month.

As part of this morning's earnings conference callHasbro CEO Brian Goldner was asked about digital gaming growth and what might be coming down the pipeline in Goldner's answer about 27 minutes in is a bit convoluted, but the short version is that Hasbro which owns Wizards of the Coast saw major growth for Magic: The Gathering Arenaand players, on average, spent about 8 hours a week playing the popular video game.

It's popular on streaming, as an esport, and so on. The usual stuff. And then Now, this isn't confirmation of a release date or even launch window, and if you really want to split hairs, Goldner could be referring to one of the other digital games in Hasbro's portfolio or some other Chris that's unaffiliated with Magic: The Gathering Arena.

But February 21st is right before this year's Toy Fair in New York, and context would seemingly suggest all signs point to a mobile version of Arena being announced by Chris Cao. What do you think?
